Outsourcing vs. Staff Augmentation: What’s the Difference?

Outsourcing refers to delegating certain business functions or processes to an external company that specializes in performing those specific tasks professionally.

When a company outsources, it contracts another legal entity (or an individual entrepreneur) to complete specific work or deliver a service according to agreed quality standards. In this model, the task can be completed by any specialist with the necessary qualifications and expertise. Work under an outsourcing agreement is performed independently — the client may monitor progress and request adjustments but does not manage the contractor’s internal team. The main success criteria in outsourcing are timely completion and compliance with the agreed contractual terms.

In Belarus, outsourcing services are widely used in areas such as IT (system and infrastructure outsourcing), logistics support, accounting services, and facility or cleaning services, among others.

In the case of staff augmentation, the individual performance of specific tasks by a particular employee—the one whom the Client transfers to the HR service provider’s payroll—plays a crucial role. The individual identity of the employee is of primary importance, as this person possesses the required qualifications and has established a proven, positive track record of working with the Client. This means the Client can be confident in the results delivered. The personality and expertise of the specialist are decisive factors in the successful completion of assigned tasks. Under the staff augmentation model, the Client retains direct management and supervision of the employee: the specialist is integrated into the Client’s team, works toward the Client’s goals, follows its methods, and operates under its ongoing control and guidance.
